Join the ABMA

Join a community of doctors dedicated to the development of medical acupuncture in Belgium since 1973.

Why become a full member of the ABMA?

The ABMA brings together physicians committed to the practice and development of medical acupuncture in Belgium. It contributes to training, the sharing of scientific knowledge, and, through the UPMAB, the professional representation of acupuncture physicians.

Becoming a full member allows you to join this professional community, participate in association activities, and access the resources, training, and services offered by the ABMA.

What are the benefits of membership?

The ABMA supports its members in their practice, training, and the development of their knowledge in medical acupuncture.

Professional representation

Through the UPMAB, medical acupuncturists are represented before the authorities, institutions, and organizations involved in the practice and recognition of medical acupuncture in Belgium.

Continuing education

Full members are regularly informed about seminars, congresses, and scientific activities organized by the ABMA and may benefit from preferential rates for certain training courses.

Reimbursement by certain health insurance funds

Some health insurance funds provide reimbursement for acupuncture services when performed by doctors who meet their specific criteria.

Directory listing

Full members who meet the association's requirements can be listed in the ABMA directory of acupuncture physicians, which is consulted by patients looking for a practitioner.

Who can join the ABMA?

Membership in the ABMA is reserved for physicians. Admission requirements depend on the medical acupuncture training completed and are defined by the association's statutes and governing bodies.

You are already trained in acupuncture

If you are a physician and have completed recognized training in medical acupuncture, you may submit an application to become a full member of the ABMA.

You wish to train

If you wish to integrate acupuncture into your medical practice, the ABMA Acupuncture School offers training specifically for physicians. This curriculum allows you to progressively acquire the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to practice medical acupuncture.

You have completed other training

Doctors who have completed acupuncture training through another organization may submit a file detailing their training background and experience.

The application is reviewed by the association's relevant authorities to determine if the requirements for becoming a full member are met.

If you have any questions regarding your status or membership procedures, please contact the ABMA secretariat.

Frequently asked questions about membership

Find answers to the most common questions regarding membership requirements and the steps to join the ABMA.

Who can become a member of the ABMA?

ABMA membership is reserved for physicians. Admission conditions take into account, among other things, the training completed in medical acupuncture. To find out which arrangements apply to your situation, you can contact the association’s secretariat.

Do I need to have completed the ABMA training to become a full member?

Not necessarily. Physicians who have completed the ABMA Acupuncture School training may apply for membership. Physicians trained by another organisation may also submit their training background to the association for review according to the applicable conditions.

How can training completed elsewhere be recognised?

The physician submits a file outlining the training completed and their experience in acupuncture. The relevant bodies within the association then review the information provided and inform the physician of any additional steps that may be required.

What benefits are reserved for full members of the ABMA?

Members may notably access continuing education activities, the association’s scientific and professional resources and, when they meet the applicable conditions, be listed in the directory of physician-acupuncturists.

How can I obtain practical information about joining?

Membership fees, required documents and administrative procedures may change. To receive up-to-date information and find out which procedure applies to your situation, contact the ABMA secretariat via the Contact page.
