Musculoskeletal pain can have various origins, such as significant mechanical stress, trauma, osteoarthritis, infection, inflammatory disease in the broad sense, and sometimes a tumor or a combination of several of these factors. Its intensity alone is not enough to determine its cause or severity.
The acupuncturist determines the duration, progression, and impact of the pain on movement, sleep, and daily activities. They look for warning signs, assess function, and take into account any examinations already performed.
Acupuncture can be used for various types of musculoskeletal pain, including certain neck, lower back, or joint pain. It primarily aims to reduce pain, tension, and their impact on movement and daily activities. Its value is assessed by the acupuncturist based on the diagnosis, the progression of symptoms, and the response to treatment.
Acupuncture can be used alone in certain situations or combined with physical activity, exercise, physical therapy, or medication when indicated. The acupuncturist works with the patient to define concrete goals, such as reducing pain, improving mobility, or facilitating a return to daily activities.
The following situations are among the primary reasons to consider acupuncture.
For certain types of low back pain or spinal pain, acupuncture may help relieve pain and make it easier to resume movement. It can be combined with physical activity, exercises and other measures recommended according to the situation.
For certain types of pain related to osteoarthritis, particularly in the knee, acupuncture may help reduce pain and improve comfort during movement. It is integrated into a management plan that may include adapted physical activity, rehabilitation and other indicated treatments.
Tendinopathies, muscle contractures, muscle pain, myofascial syndromes, and certain types of persistent post-injury pain are all common reasons to seek acupuncture. Treatment focuses on relieving pain and tension, serving as a complement to the care and rehabilitation required for your specific injury.
For certain types of radiating pain, acupuncture can be used to help manage discomfort, provided it follows a medical and neurological assessment. However, any weakness, loss of sensation, or bowel or bladder dysfunction requires immediate medical attention.

No. Acupuncture does not make a herniated disc disappear and does not restore cartilage damaged by osteoarthritis. It may, however, be used to help relieve pain, improve comfort and support the resumption of activities, alongside other recommended measures.
Acupuncture may be considered for certain recent pain conditions as well as persistent pain, depending on their cause and the clinical context. Pain that occurs after trauma, is particularly severe or unusual, or is associated with neurological signs should nevertheless be medically assessed before any treatment.
If examinations have already been carried out, their reports may be useful. They do not, however, replace the medical history and clinical examination. New imaging is not systematically required; the doctor assesses its usefulness according to the symptoms and signs observed.
No. Acupuncture can be combined with exercise, physiotherapy and other treatments to build a management plan suited to the situation. For many types of back or joint pain, gradually returning to activity remains an important goal.
The number and frequency of sessions are tailored to the diagnosis, the duration of the pain, the treatment goals, and the progress observed. The doctor regularly reviews the results to adjust the care plan and decide, in consultation with the patient, whether to continue or space out the sessions.
Sudden or unusual pain, chest pain, breathing difficulties, loss of consciousness, high fever or rapid worsening require urgent medical assessment. The same applies after major trauma or in the presence of a sudden neurological deficit, loss of strength, speech disturbance, significant loss of sensation, or new difficulty urinating or controlling bowel movements. Acupuncture should never delay this medical care.
