Stress, anxiety and functional symptoms

Stress, anxiety, tension, perceived palpitations or sleep problems: acupuncture may be proposed to help manage certain symptoms and improve day-to-day comfort, following an appropriate medical assessment.

Understanding stress, anxiety and their physical manifestations

Stress is a normal reaction, but it can become overwhelming or form part of an anxiety disorder requiring specific care. Physical symptoms are real, but they should not automatically be attributed to anxiety.

Symptoms that require assessment.

Palpitations, breathing discomfort, fatigue, digestive problems, muscle tension or sleep difficulties may have several causes.

What is the role of acupuncture?

Acupuncture may be proposed to help manage certain manifestations associated with stress or anxiety, including muscle tension, sleep problems or certain functional symptoms. Its relevance is assessed by the physician according to the symptoms, their progression and their impact.

A comprehensive approach.

Acupuncture may be integrated into a care plan that, depending on the situation, also includes stress-management measures, psychological support, physical activity or medical treatment. Goals are defined with the patient and reassessed over the course of consultations.

In which situations may acupuncture be proposed?

The situations below illustrate different manifestations of stress or anxiety for which acupuncture may be considered. The physician assesses its relevance according to the symptoms, their intensity, duration and the medical context.

Muscle tension

Stress can promote or worsen muscle tension, particularly in the neck, shoulders or back. Acupuncture may be proposed to help reduce this tension, relieve pain and improve physical comfort.

Autonomic symptoms

Perceived palpitations, rapid breathing, a feeling of tightness or other autonomic manifestations may accompany stress or anxiety. Once a medical cause has been ruled out, acupuncture may be considered to help manage some of these symptoms. A cardiac, respiratory or metabolic cause should of course be investigated when the situation requires it.

Sleep problems

Stress and anxiety can make it harder to fall asleep, contribute to night-time awakenings or impair sleep quality. Acupuncture may be proposed to help manage these problems as part of an approach that also takes sleep habits and other contributing factors into account.

Functional symptoms

Stress can influence or worsen certain digestive, respiratory or pain-related symptoms. After medical assessment, acupuncture may be proposed to help manage these manifestations and contribute to improving the patient's comfort.

Can acupuncture treat stress or anxiety?

Acupuncture may be proposed to help manage certain symptoms associated with stress or anxiety, such as tension, sleep problems or certain physical manifestations. In the case of a more significant anxiety disorder, it may be integrated into a care plan that also includes psychological support or medical treatment when indicated.

Can it help with sleep problems related to stress?

Yes. Acupuncture may be proposed to help manage certain sleep problems associated with stress or anxiety. The physician considers difficulties falling asleep, night-time awakenings, sleep quality and other factors that may affect it in order to propose an appropriate care plan.

Does acupuncture replace medication or psychotherapy?

No. Acupuncture may be combined with psychotherapy, medication or other approaches when indicated. Any adjustment to a prescribed treatment should be discussed with the physician who initiated it.

How many sessions are usually needed?

The number and frequency of sessions are adapted to the symptoms, how long they have been present and the goals defined with the patient. The physician regularly reassesses progress in order to adjust the care plan, space out sessions or consider other approaches if necessary.

When should you see a doctor promptly for stress-related symptoms?

If symptoms appear suddenly, are accompanied by chest pain, loss of consciousness, significant breathing difficulties or any other unusual sign, prompt medical assessment is essential to rule out an emergency.

What happens during the first consultation?

The physician begins by reviewing your symptoms, medical history, treatments and general health. This consultation makes it possible to determine whether acupuncture is indicated and to define the goals of treatment.
